Dozens of guns were recovered by noon.
ASBURY PARK -- People lined up Saturday morning to trade in their guns for cash during the Monmouth County Prosecutor's annual gun buyback.
The event started at 8:30 a.m. at the Prosecutor's satellite office at 710 Main St. and will continue until 5 p.m.
By noon, dozens of guns had been turned over. Participants were offered $25 for rifles and shotguns, $100 for handguns and $200 for assault weapons, officials said.
No compensation for ammunition, replicas, or BB and Pellet Guns will be offered.
Last year, the program netted 428 guns during a two-day event in Asbury Park and Keansburg. Among the haul last year 15 assault weapons, 80 semi-automatic handguns, 206 revolvers, 33 shotguns and 56 rifles were recovered, the prosecutor said.
The program sponsored by the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office, the Monmouth County Police Chief's Association and the Asbury Park Police Department.
