The fire was contained to the chimney area of the home.
MIDDLETOWN -- Dozens of firefighters from five area departments battled a fire in 200-year-old two-story house Friday night in the Navesink section of town.
The Middletown Township Fire Department responded at around 8:10 p.m. to a report of a chimney fire at a home on Hillside Avenue.
The first units on scene reported heavy smoke emanating from the house, which is set back approximately 300 feet from the roadway and located at the top of a hill.
Because of the location of the home, firefighters had to use what they call a "mansion line" - a fire hose with a 300-foot supply line - to extinguish the blaze.
The firefighters were able to contain the blaze, Dennis Fowler, spokesman for the Middletown Township Fire Department, said in a news release.
Fowler said the fire was declared under control at 8:35 p.m., and the last firefighters left the scene by 10 p.m.
Firefighters from the following departments responded to the scene: Navesink, Brevent Park and Leonardo, Community, Belford Engine and Belford Independent.
The Middletown Township Fire Department's Air Support Unit and Fairview First Aid Squad also assisted at the scene.
Deputy fire Chief Anthony Citaralla of the Middletown Township Fire Department led the efforts.
The fire is under investigation by the Middletown Township Fire Prevention office.
