WALL TWP. -- A police impostor, who was reportedly armed with a handgun, approached someone at a drive-up ATM Sunday night and stole money and the victim's car keys, police said.
The incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. at the Bank of America at the corner of Route 35 and 18th Avenue, police said in a statement released to news outlets.
Detective Lt. Pete Lokerson said the victim told police he was sitting in his vehicle at the drive-up ATM machine when a man with a handgun approached him.
The man identified himself as a police officer and ordered the victim to take out money from the ATM machine, Lokerson said. He then took the money and the victim's car keys and fled on foot in the direction of 18th Avenue, the lieutenant added.
Police asked anyone with information to contact Detective Rick Pasqualini or Sgt. Chris Scebro at 732-449-4800. The shift supervisor can also be reached at 732-449-4500.
The alleged bank robbery comes just weeks after police say a Long Branch man robbed the Exxon gas station across the street. The man wanted in connection with the Exxon robbery, Daniel Popo, was arrested after he was located driving a stolen vehicle in Woodbridge, according to police.
