The bicyclist, who was riding against the flow of traffic, broke his hip and cut his head, police said
OCEAN TOWNSHIP -- An 85-year-old bicyclist was injured Wednesday when he ran into a garbage truck as he was riding through an intersection in Ocean Township, authorities said Thursday.
The 9:26 a.m. collision at Norwood and Park avenues left the bicyclist, Ronald Dunn, of Long Branch, with a broken hip and a cut to his head, said Ocean Township Detective Lt. Timothy Torchia, spokesman for the department.
Torchia said Dunn was riding his bike east on Park Avenue against the flow of traffic
An Ocean Township garbage truck driven by Gualberto Santiago was also headed east on Park Avenue and stopped at a red traffic light at Norwood Avenue, Torchia said. When the light turned green, Santiago turned left to head onto Norwood Avenue and as he was turning, Dunn rode into the intersection and hit the side of the truck, which then ran over the bike.
He said Dunn was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.
