The student suffered a broken ankle after the fall, authorities said
ASBURY PARK -- An Asbury Park High School student was injured when she jumped out a window to avoid taking a test Wednesday morning, police said.
The 15-year-old student leaped from a second-floor window at the high school at 8:44 a.m. because she didn't want to take a test, said Officer Michael Casey, spokesman for the Asbury Park Police Department.
The teen was taken to the hospital for treatment for a broken ankle and for an evaluation, he said.
School officials said the high school was conducting PSAT testing on Wednesday for freshman, sophomores and juniors. There was a delayed opening for seniors.
The student who jumped is a sophomore who arrived at school around before 7:47 a.m. and reported to homeroom, according to school officials They said that rather than go to her assigned testing location, she went to the second-floor ladies bathroom on the building's east side and climbed out of the window in an effort to leave the building. The student fell to the ground, and yelled for help, school officials said.
Nurses from Asbury Park High School and the neighboring Monmouth County Vocational School District attended to her until emergency services arrived. The student was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment and evaluation, school officials said.
"It's unfortunate that one of our students took extreme measures to exit the building, which resulted in her being injured," Superintendent Lamont Repollet said. "Our priority is to have a safe learning environment where we take the safety and security of all of our students very seriously."
Counselors will be made available to staff and students who may have been affected, he said.
