MIDDLETOWN -- A township man, who was pulled over on his motorcycle, was arrested Sunday morning after he tried to fight an officer, police said.
Shortly after 11 a.m., a law enforcement officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Route 35 after he spotted a motorcycle speeding and driving in a "reckless manner," police said in a news release.
The motorcyclist, later identified as 18-year-old Nicholas J. Lewandowski of Middletown, tried to speed away from Officer Thomas Hughes, police said.
Police said Lewandowski crashed the motorcycle in a parking lot, before he fled on foot. Unable to outrun Hughes, Lewandowski stopped and tried to fight the officer, according to police.
An off-duty Holmdel cop, David D'Arcy, drove by the incident as it was happening and stopped to assist.
Lewandowski was arrested and charged with eluding, hindering apprehension, obstruction, aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest, police said. He was also charged with not possessing a motorcycle license, operating an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and other moving violations.
Lewandowski was taken to the Monmouth County jail in lieu of $60,000 bail with no 10-percent option.
