Firefighters will now have access to real-time information in active situations.
OCEAN TOWNSHIP -- Firefighters in the township will now have access to real-time information when responding to incidents, officials announced on Thursday.
Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said 13 fire trucks will now be equipped with a software that provides firefighters with information about hydrant locations, building plans, GPS functions, among other vital information that first responders need.
"Fire departments, along with law enforcement agencies, must stay up to date in this ever changing world of technology," Golden said. "The new Spillman software enables responders to obtain information about an incident within seconds through real time reports, locations and communications. That's crucial during urgent situations."
With the new equipment, firefighters will also be able to have real-time communication with public-safety communicators, freeing up radio traffic for only important messages.
The Monmouth County fire marshal, Kevin Stout, said technology plays an "ever increasing role" in active fire situations.
He said the new technology "provides firefighters with a situational awareness" not previously available to them.
Ocean Township joins the nearly 60 fire departments, 32 EMS agencies and 21 police departments that the county's Communications Division answer 911 calls for.
