The candlelight vigil will take place outside the Monmouth County Police Academy on Monday night.
FREEHOLD -- Members of law enforcement agencies and residents of Monmouth County will join together Monday evening to honor the five officers fatally shot on Thursday.
A candlelight vigil will be held in front of the Monmouth County Police Academy, 2000 Kozloski Road in Freehold at 7:30 p.m. Those who wish to attend should bring their own candle.
Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said in a statement his office is "deeply saddened" over the "senseless tragedy" in Dallas.
"These officers did what they were trained, and sworn to do," he said. "... We all must value human life, and by working together in establishing and promoting police and public partnerships, bridges of trust and cooperation can be built."
The public is invited to attend Monday night's vigil, which was organized by the Sheriff's Office in cooperation with Monmouth County's Prosecutor's Office, Chiefs of Police Association and Public Benevolent Association.
Authorities identified Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, as the lone gunman who opened fire from a downtown Dallas parking garage, killing five police officers and wounding seven more. The barrage of gunfire came during what was otherwise a peaceful protest held in response to the fatal police-involved shootings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Philando Castil in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.
In the wake of those shootings, supporters of the Black Lives Matter movement have been hosting rallies in many New Jersey cities.
At the same time, many police departments in the state put their officers on alert and mourned the deaths of those who died in the line of duty in Dallas.
