The accident near Exit 117 Friday evening killed two people and injured 12, state police said.
Police have identified two people who were killed in a single-car crash on the Garden State Parkway on Friday evening.
Elizabeth resident Esperanza Guardado-Quintani, 56, and Irvington resident Charles Derosier, 30, were ejected from a 14-passenger van after it flipped over just south of Exit 117 around 6:46 p.m., according to New Jersey State Police. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The other 12 passengers of the 2001 Ford van were injured, and four of them were flown to Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel, Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams said. He said those four injuries were considered serious.
Manuel Perez, 58, of Elizabeth, was driving in the left northbound express lane when he lost control of the van, Williams said. He said the car hit a guardrail and a cement support structure before it flipped over.
Perez was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released, Williams said.
The crash closed the left two northbound express lanes of the Parkway for about four hours Friday evening.
Williams said an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing and no one has been charged in connection with the incident.
