Farmingdale Mayor John P. "Jay" Morgan died Sunday after a battle with cancer.
FARMINGDALE -- The beloved mayor who died Sunday morning after a battle with cancer will be laid to rest Friday.
John P. "Jay" Morgan, 53, a lifelong resident of Farmingdale, was the mayor of the tiny Monmouth County borough since 2004. He was diagnosed with bladder cancer in 2015.
Morgan recently retired from PSE&G after 33 years with the company. He worked as a troubleshooter in the company's Central Division in East Brunswick.
Away from work, Morgan spent much of his time serving Farmingdale, those close to him say.
"Mayor for him was a 24/7 job, guaranteed," Councilwoman Patricia Linszky told NJ Advance Media. "He did nothing but eat, breath and sleep this community. So for him, this was everything."
He was also a longtime member of the Farmingdale Fire Department, serving as its chief at one point, and active in the Farmingdale/Howell Lion's Club and the borough's Historical Society.
Morgan enjoyed playing golf in his free time, according to his obituary.
In an email to NJ Advance Media, Farmingdale's deputy mayor, Jim Daly, said Morgan was a long-time friend, colleague and mentor.
"Jay was more than a peer, he was a friend. As he did with so many other residents, he welcomed my new family into his little community of Farmingdale back in 1992," Daly wrote in the email. "During my 23+ years as resident in the Borough of Farmingdale, Jay was always there as a friend to all, and it's my sincerest hope that he knows he will be missed."
Morgan's funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, 100 Elton-Adelphia Road (Route 524), in Freehold Township. Visitation will be held Wednesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the same funeral home.
Contributions can be made in honor of Morgan to the Farmingdale/Howell Lion's Club, 2 Fox Hill Drive, in Howell.
