OCEAN GROVE -- Two men were arrested Monday morning after police say they tried to enter an idling vehicle.

Neptune Township police responded to the area of Franklin Avenue and Pilgram Pathway in the Ocean Grove section of town at around 5:10 a.m. after receiving a report of two subjects attempting to enter a running vehicle.

One of the suspects was armed with a handgun, Neptune police Lt. Michael McGhee said in a statement sent to news outlets. The suspects fled the area in another vehicle when the occupant of the idling vehicle confronted them. It's unclear if the occupant was inside or outside the running vehicle.

A description of the suspects and the get-away vehicle was sent out to surrounding police departments, and within an hour, Asbury Park police stopped a vehicle that matched the description, McGhee said.

The two men in the vehicle, 25-year-old Omego Archer of Asbury Park and 25-year-old Marcquan Clarke of Neptune, were both arrested and charged with possession of a handgun, McGhee said.

He said after further investigation, Archer and Clark were charged in connection with the Ocean Grove robbery attempt. They each received additional charges of armed robbery, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose and certain persons not to possess weapons.

Both men were taken to the Monmouth County jail.

Police asked that anyone with information to contact Neptune police Detective Matthew Webb at 732-988-8000 ext. 415. Anonymous tips can be made with the Monmouth County Crime Stoppers at 800-671-4100, or text "Monmouth" and the tip to 274637.
