The complex is located near the intersection of Valley Road and Route 36, near the Middletown border.
ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS -- Authorities investigated a reported barricaded subject inside a residence on King James Lane Tuesday night, police said.
Chief Jerry Vasto said police responded to the residence after receiving a report of a possible barricaded subject with a weapon.
Police had the entrance to King James Court condominium complex closed off for several hours as authorities could be seen standing around the building with automatic guns pointed at a window.
Officers from Atlantic Highlands and other area police departments were able to clear the scene without incident, Vasto said. They were assisted by the Monmouth County Emergency Response Team.
Charles Webster, a spokesman with the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, said the subject was located at a different location and is safe.
The incident remains under investigation by Atlantic Highlands police and the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.
Middletown resident Tony Marione said he arrived at his friend's place across the street from the complex at around 6:30 p.m.
"When I got here I saw a heavy police presence and a few SWAT officers with riffles pointed up at an apartment," said Marione, adding he thought he saw police try to send something into the apartment but was unable to see if they succeeded.
"That was an about an hour ago and it's been pretty calm since," he said at around 7:30 p.m.
At around 8:15 p.m., officers could be seen exiting one of the apartment units and leaving the scene.
Residents at the complex said they were told they couldn't go to their homes.
