MIDDLETOWN -- A township police officer is being haled as a hero after he came to the aid of woman who went into labor Saturday during the historic blizzard.
In the middle of the storm, which dumped 19 inches of snow in Middletown, a woman's water broke at her home on Seabreeze Avenue in the North Middletown section of town.
Besides the obvious problem of travel conditions to the hospital, the woman had another urgent issue: no one could get to her home to watch her other children.
That's when Cpl. Robert McNair of the Middletown Police Department picked the woman's mother up on Church Street in the Belford section of town and drove her to her daughter's house, said Deputy Chief Steven Dollinger.
The woman was then taken to the hospital, where she had the baby, Dollinger said.
Dollinger didn't have information on the mother or the baby.
The story touched the hearts of hundreds this weekend after it was shared on a local Facebook group. The post received at least 338 shares and 118 comments, many of which commended the officer for going above and beyond his call for duty.
"Great story! Thank you Middletown police for helping when a family needed you!" one commenter wrote.
Another said, "What a wonderful thing! The police never get enough credit and they keep us safe and protect us! Thank you officers."
This wasn't the only blizzard baby of the historic storm. At around 5 p.m. on Saturday, emergency responders helped deliver a baby at a Hoboken home.
