JACKSON -- Motorists in the area of Millstone and Jackson should expect lane closures on Interstate 195 this week as work continues on the replacement of the bridge deck at interchange 16.
State transportation officials said the alternating lane closures in both directions of the highway began on Tuesday and will continue through Friday at 5 p.m.
The single-lane closures between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. start in the eastbound lanes Tuesday and Wednesday and then switch to the westbound lanes on Thursday and Friday to prepare for construction to move into the second - and final - phase.
The work, by the state's contractor, MidLantic Construction LLC, is to install temporary shielding and to perform demolition.
The second phase of the $1.8 million federally funded project entails shifting traffic beginning Friday onto the newly completed east side of the Monmouth Road Bridge so that work can begin on the west side of bridge. That traffic shift is expected to be in place for several months, according to the state Department of Transportation.
The deck replacement project began in September.
