ASBURY PARK -- An employee of a landmark beachfront hotel was arrested Tuesday after she stole more than $7,000 from newlywed couples on several occasions, police said.

Stacey Gilman, 36, of Asbury Park, entered hotel rooms at the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel on Ocean Avenue three times between Dec. 4 and 13, said acting police Chief Anthony Salerno.

Gilman was an employee of the hotel, Salerno said. She, with the help of Rafael Sanchez, 25, of Asbury Park, stole more than $7,000 in proceeds from wedding gifts before the two were arrested on Tuesday, the chief said.

Gilman and Sanchez were each charged with burglary and theft, and bail was set at $75,000 each with no 10-percent option.

As a condition of bail, Gilman and Sanchez were ordered not to return to the hotel.

A hotel manager could not be immediately reached for comment.
