Rep. Chris Smith was one of three individuals nominated by President Obama Thursday to represent the U.S. at the United Nations General Assembly.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Chris Smith was nominated to join the American delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, the White House announced Thursday.

President Obama chose Smith (R-4th Dist.) and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) from the House as part of the delegation. He also nominated former White House deputy counsel Cassandra Q. Butts.

"I am confident that these individuals will serve the American people well, and I look forward to working with them in the months to come," Obama said.

The General Assembly opens Tuesday in New York.

Smith, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Africa, global health, global human rights and international organizations, has long been interested in international human rights issues. He was part of the U.S. delegation to the General Assembly in 1989 and 2009.
