ABERDEEN -- A Holmdel man was charged with crashing into a school van in Aberdeen while he was drunk and then leaving the scene, authorities said.

Anthony R. Carbone, 24, was driving a 2003 Ford F-450 truck south on Route 35 near Amboy Avenue in Aberdeen on Nov. 25 around 2:20 p.m. when he rear-ended a school van that was stopped at a traffic light, police Chief John Powers said on Friday.

Powers said that after the crash, Carbone drove off, but he was stopped a short time later on Bethany Road near Holmdel Road in Hazlet by police there.

The driver of the van, an aide and a student sustained minor injuries, he said. The van was registered to the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District, he said.

When Carbone was arrested, police found on him suspected heroin, Powers said.

Carbone, who lives on Bethany Road, was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash, failure to report a crash and assault by auto.

He was released after being given a date for a court appearance.

Aberdeen Sgt. Matthew Lloyd conducted the investigation with help from Capt. Alan Geyer, Officer John Young, Detective Louis Nanna, and Hazlet police officer Richard Dickens.
