The collision happened shortly before 9 a.m. on Route 34 at the intersection with Roberts Road.
A preliminary investigation found that a 2010 Mazda CX-9 driven by a 69-year-old township woman was traveling south on Route 34 and attempted to make a left turn onto Roberts Road when it collided with a 2009 Toyota Prius traveling northbound, said Charles Webster, a spokesman with the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.
A 23-year-old exchange student from Denmark, Emil Christian Tellerup, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he died about 12 hours after the crash, Webster said.
Tellerup was a rear passenger in the Toyota. Three other occupants in the Toyota were taken to area trauma centers, Webster said.
The driver, a 65-year-old woman, was the wife of the front-seat passenger, who is also 65. Both are Colts Neck residents. However, the other rear-seat passenger was a 21-year-old exchange student from Switzerland, Webster said.
The 69-year-old driver of the Mazda, who was the sole occupant of that vehicle, was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
