OCEAN TOWNSHIP -- Authorities are investigating the death of a 42-year-old man who was hit while trying to cross a highway in Ocean Township on Friday night.
The accident occurred at 6:11 p.m. on Route 35 north near the Super 8 Motel, said Charlie Webster, spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.
The man, who was not identified, was crossing from Route 35 north to the southbound side of the highway in an area that was not marked as a crosswalk, said Ocean Township Detective Lt. Kevin Faller.
He was hit in a northbound lane near Logan Road by a white 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee being operated by a 27-year-old Neptune City woman, who Faller also did not identify.
The man was pronounced dead at 6:27 p.m., Webster said.
No motor vehicle summonses have been issued pending the investigation but police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Ocean Township police Sgt. Todd Gregory or Officer Alisa Martinez of the Traffic Safety Bureau at 732-531-1800.
Ocean Township police, the county's Serious Collision Analysis Response Team and the prosecutor's office are investigating.
Neither Webster nor Faller provided any more details about the incident.
