Anthony Salerno served as Asbury Park's acting police chief since 2014.

ASBURY PARK - When the city's acting Police Chief Anthony Salerno retires Sunday, he will receive a $127,000 payout on top of his pension for unused vacation and sick time, the Asbury Park Press reported.

State pension regulations require police and firefighters to retire at the age of 65.

Salerno, who has been a police officer for 29 years and acting chief since 2014, will turn 65 in December, the Asbury Park Press reported.

The $127,000 payout includes 524 hours of unused vacation time and 2,155 hours of unused sick time that Salerno had remaining as of February, the report said.

Deputy Chief David Kelso will run the department's day-to-day operations until Salerno's replacement is named, City Manager Michael Capabianco told the Asbury Park Press.
