ASBURY PARK -- A Neptune Township man was indicted on attempted murder charges for a stabbing outside a house party in July, authorities said on Tuesday.

The indictment charged Anthony J. Butts, 21, with first-degree attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon, acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced in a news release.

Shortly after 1 a.m. on July 31, an Asbury Park police officer was on patrol when he heard screaming coming from a parking lot on Springwood Avenue, Gramiccioni said.

When the officer arrived, he found a large group of people and a 25-year-old stabbing victim on the ground bleeding profusely, Gramiccioni said.

The victim, who was not identified, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he was treated for several stab wounds to his upper body.

An investigation found that the victim was having a party at his sister's house with several friends and family. Butts was at the party, but left with the victim and got into a parked car, Gramiccioni said.

He said once inside the car, Butts stabbed the victim several times and then fled from the scene as the victim stumbled out of the car.

Butts was arrested later that day by the Asbury Park police and taken to the Monmouth County jail. He remains at the jail on $500,000 bail.

Butts could receive a maximum sentence of 20 years in state prison if convicted of attempted murder.
