The 2-acre estate includes 150 feet of beachfront, 10-bedroom main house and twin cabanas flaking the pool

Got $171,153 for a beachfront home in Long Branch? Good. That will cover the annual property taxes on a French chateau-style mansion recently listed for $40 million, according to Zillow. which makes it the most expensive home currently on the market at the Jersey Shore, and the second most expensive in the state.

The mansion sits on a nearly two-acre rectangular lot with 150 feet of Atlantic Ocean frontage in the Elberon section of Long Branch, the historic resort community once know as Hollywood of the East for the performers it attracted in the 19th century.

Built in 1995, it was designed by Anthony Ingrao, named to Architectural Digest's 2014 list of the world's best interior designers and architects, with interiors featuring limestone, marble, onyx and mosaic. It has 10 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms over three floors, and a pool flanked on both sides by cabanas with full bathrooms, plus a private beach. The front courtyard includes two two-story cottages/garages.  (Diane Turton Realtors, which has listing, would not comment on the home.)

There may be other properties as pricey but listed privately, known as "pocket listings" or "office exclusives," but generally those make up a very percentage of the total market. They are often more prevalent when inventory is low and demand is high, according to Annekee Brahver-Keely, the president of the New Jersey Multiple Listing Service.

The most expensive home on the open market in New Jersey is Alpine's 30,000-square-foot Stone Mansion, once part of the Henry Clay Frick estate. It includes a ballroom, movie theater, a 3,200-bottle wine cellar, a sports lounge, a subterranean basketball court, and a pool -- and has been on the market since 2010. The price has been slashed from $68 million to $49 million
