The man was revived at the scene after paramedics gave him Narcan, an antidote that reverses the effects of a drug overdose.
HOLMDEL - A 30-year-old Tinton Falls man who suffered a drug overdose while driving crashed his car into a utility pole Friday night, police said.
The driver, whose identity was not released by police, was driving a black Toyota sedan southbound on Route 34 shortly after 11 p.m. when he had a drug overdose, police said in a news release.
The man lost control of the car near the intersection of Deer Path, crossed over the center lane into the northbound lane and then traveled several hundred feet off the roadway before hitting a utility pole, police said.
First responders at the scene gave the man Narcan, an antidote that reverses the effects of a drug overdose. The man regained consciousness at the scene and was taken to Bayshore Community Hospital in Holmdel for additional treatment, police said.
The Holmdel First Aid Squad, MONOC paramedics and the Holmdel Fire Department responded to the scene.
The Asbury Park Press identified the driver as Matthew Gianna, 30, of Tinton Falls. Police said the driver was charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.
