Belmar officials are discussing the possibility of banning artificial turf lawns throughout their oceanfront borough.
BELMAR - The borough council held a discussion Tuesday night on the possibility of prohibiting the use of artificial turf lawns in the borough, News 12 reported.
Belmar officials said they have been looking at ordinances from other towns that limit the use of artificial lawns, because it does not benefit the environment the way real grass does, the report said.
Nearly a dozen Belmar properties already use artificial turf instead of real grass, stone or sand.
Some of those property owners with turf told News 12 that they do so because it is environmentally safe, convenient and prevents harmful stormwater runoff from lawn fertilizers.
The issue was examined during an information-gathering workshop discussion during which members of the public were able to comment.
