Anthony Gallo allegedly used the funds to pay for personal expenses, including his phone bill and shopping

FREEHOLD -- A 57-year-old Freehold Township man has been charged with theft for allegedly taking $450,000 from the Freehold Soccer League while serving as its volunteer treasurer, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni said in a statement Wednesday.

Anthony Gallo allegedly carried out the theft between 2012 and 2016, writing checks to his company, Beacon Financial Services, and to himself against the league's operating account. The checks totalled $300,000, authorities said.

Gallo is accused of stealing an additional $120,000 via ATM withdrawals and also allegedly used league funds for $25,000 in personal expenses, including $12,000 for his wireless phone bills and thousands more for restaurant meals, shopping and at a car dealership, Honda of Freehold.

Authorities began investigating in March 2016, when the president of the league called the Financial Crimes Unit and reported that a vendor had not been paid for uniforms and that cash was missing from league accounts.

If convicted, Gallo faces up to 10 years in prison. He was released pending a court date.
