Bryan Burford admitted to gunning down Tyrell Howard in 2013
FREEHOLD -- A 24-year-old Asbury Park man admitted on Tuesday he fatally shot a city man at an apartment complex nearly four years ago.
In pleading guilty to aggravated manslaughter, Bryan Burford said he killed Tyrell Howard, 20, on Aug. 16, 2013, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said in a press release.
The shooting occurred near Buildings 3 and 4 of the Washington Village Apartment Complex on Washington Avenue at 10:16 p.m., authorities said at the time.
Officers found Howard shot several times, police said.
He was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he was pronounced dead at 10:40 p.m.
Burford was arrested Oct. 6, 2013, after a joint investigation by the Asbury Park Police Department and the prosecutor's office
In return for his plea, prosecutors dismissed a murder charge against Burford.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 18 by Superior Court Judge Richard English, who accepted the plea.
Prosecutors will recommend that Burford be sentenced to 18 years in prison and require that he serve more than 15 years of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole, Gramiccioni said.
Burford would then be placed on parole for five years after his release, the prosecutor said.
