Middletown police officers delivered a baby boy inside of a car in the parking lot of a Route 35 hotel.
MIDDLETOWN - Township police officers delivered a baby boy in a car outside a Route 35 hotel on Saturday after the parents realized they were not going to make it to the hospital in time and called 911.
Kristen Erickson was being taken to the hospital by her husband around 12:15 p.m. when it became clear her labor was progressing quickly, Det. Lt Paul Bailey said in a release.
The couple stopped in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn on Route 35 and called 911.
Patrolman Nicholas Manchio arrived first and tended to Erickson. Cpl. Ryan Riffert arrived as the baby was beginning to crown, Bailey said.
The two officers delivered the baby inside of the vehicle.
Shortly after the baby was born, Port Monmouth First Aid and MONOC Paramedics arrived, took over medical care and took the mother and her baby to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank.
Erickson and her newborn son, Axl, were both in good health on Monday night and she extended her appreciation to the two officers, Bailey said.
