Only several thousand are in the dark as of 8:20 a.m but that figure could climb as the storm intensifies
The wind and rain that is hitting New Jersey on Monday as a powerful nor'easter approaches has knocked out power for thousands of customers scattered throughout the state.
Numbers have fluctuated the past few hours as crews work to restore power, but have remained below 5,000 through the morning. As of 8:20 a.m., more than 4,000 customers were out between PSE&G, Jersey Central Power and Light, and Atlantic City Electric.
Most of the outages are in Camden and Monmouth counties, according to the utilities' outage trackers.
New Jersey school closings, delayed openings
JCP&L and Atlantic City Electric each have about 2,000 homes and businesses with no service.
Outages might rise later as heavier rain and stronger winds are likely to pound the state Monday afternoon and evening. Sussex County could also receive several inches of snow and a coating of ice.
On Sunday, PSE&G told customers they could text OUT to 47734 if they lose power and also advised people to keep electronic devices charged.
