The calls started coming in about a month ago, said Ronnie Ehrenspeck, general manager for the Monmouth County branch of the Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey.

WALL -- If you've spotted two goats on the side of the Garden State Parkway near exit 100, you're not seeing things.

That's what Ronnie Ehrenspeck is telling people who call to report the goat sightings. Ehrenspeck is the general manager for the Monmouth County branch of the Associated Humane Societies of New Jersey.

She said the calls started coming in about a month ago. Officials have been trying to catch the goats -- one black and one white -- ever since.

"We're trying everything," Ehrenspeck said. "You have to be careful how you chase them, because you don't want them to keep running towards the Parkway and they get hit. So we have to be careful how we do this."

Ehrenspeck said the group has a plan in place it will implement on Tuesday: Feed them inside a custom-built pen in hopes the goats get comfortable and return to the area.

"Hopefully we'll catch them," she said.

But part of the plan is also asking for the public's cooperation. Ehrenspeck urged motorists in the area to keep driving if they spot the goats.

"We don't really want anyone to go in the area and (stop) traffic," she said. "We're asking people to stay out of that area. We're working on it."

There's little information about the goats; Humane Society staff can't get close enough to the elusive animals to determine age or any other clues as to where they came from.

"They run pretty fast," Ehrenspeck said. "They're pretty quick."

It's possible they wandered from someone's farm far away, Ehrenspeck said. Staff thought they had a promising lead when they discovered a fence with a hole in it at a nearby farm. But it turns out the owners of that farm never had any goats.

This wouldn't be the first time a goat was on the loose near a busy highway in New Jersey. A couple years ago, a goat wandered onto the Pulaski Skyway in Jersey City, causing an accident and standstill traffic during the morning rush hour.

It was a happy ending for the goat, however; it was captured and brought to a Sussex County farm.

Officials are hoping for the same ending in Wall.

Some witnesses have taken to Twitter to report their sightings of the crafty creatures:
