Brick Police said they went to the house to assist DYFS.
BRICK -- A police check on the welfare of children Monday led to the arrest of a man and the seizure of approximately seven pounds of marijuana and other drugs, police announced Wednesday.
Brick Township police officers responded to a home on Briar Mills Drive to assist the state Division of Child Protection and Permanency (the agency formerly known as DYFS) to check on the welfare of the children in the home, Sgt. Neal Pedersen, the department's spokesman, said in a news release.
Once inside the home, Pedersen said, the officers smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from one of the bedrooms. Police entered the room and spotted various devices used to smoke drugs and mason jars filled with pot, Pedersen said.
A search of the room turned up a duffle bag filled with a large amount of packaged marijuana, Pedersen said.
Police said the room belonged to Marc Roshop, 20, who was arrested and taken to police headquarters.
In the room, police said officers found seven pounds of marijuana, 12 ounces of wax papers containing the drug hashish, commonly known as hash, 150 black sealed plastic bags each containing one gram of hash and several devices used to smoke drugs.
Roshop was taken to the Ocean County Jail, and bail was set at $100,000 with no 10-percent option. He was charged with various drug possession and drug distribution offenses, police said.
The Division of Child Protection and Permanency is conducting its own investigation on the welfare of the children, Pedersen said.
