MIDDLETOWN -- A fire that sent an 82-year-old to the hospital Saturday also destroyed at least three residences at a condominium community in Middletown, police said.

The Middletown Police and Fire departments responded to the fire on Hancock Court at about 3:59 p.m., Middletown Detective Lt. Paul Baily said.

Hancock Court is inside Shadow Lake Village, a condo community for people 55 and older. The second floor of a multi-family house was on fire when first responders arrived, Baily said.

Emergency responders found an 82-year-old man outside the building, Baily said. He had second- and third-degree burns to his hands, heads and face and had inhaled smoke.

A helicopter flew him to the burn center at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.

The fire destroyed at least three residences, Baily said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
