Police agencies throughout the state will be patrolling with extra vigilance during the holiday, implementing DWI checkpoints in an effort to reduce alcohol-related crashes.
Here are just a few towns where police plan to deploy additional patrols and DWI checkpoints during this holiday:
- Atlantic Highlands
- Aberdeen
- Belmar
- Hazlet
- Highlands
- Holmdel
- Keyport
- Keansburg
- Matawan
- Middletown
- Neptune
- New Brunswick
- North Bergen
- Union Beach
- Union City
More people were killed in car crashes during the last Thanksgiving holiday than the previous year.
Over the five-day period between Thanksgiving Eve and the following Sunday last year, 15 people were killed in car crashes in the state. This was an increase from the 10 fatalities reported the previous year, according to a previous report, citing federal data from the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety.
Between Dec. 11, 2015 and Jan. 1, 2016, Pennsauken and Woodbridge had the most DWI arrests, each with 23. Spotswood and Wall tied for second, each with 19 DWI arrests, according to the state Division of Highway Traffic Safety's holiday crackdown report.
