Marvin Hodgon, a 58-year-old Manalapan man, was killed as he crossed Route 33 on Sunday night.
MANALAPAN -- A car fatally struck a township man Sunday night as he crossed Route 33 in the area of Woodward Road, authorities said.
The vehicle, a 2006 Ford Five Hundred, was traveling westbound on Route 33 when it hit 58-year-old Marvin Hodgdon in the left lane shortly before 9 p.m., Charles Webster, a spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office, said.
A preliminary investigation showed that the driver of the Ford, Peter Ramsdell, passed through a green traffic signal and then collided with Hodgdon just after he cleared the intersection, Webster said.
Hodgdon was crossing the road slightly west of the intersection of Woodward Road outside of a designated crosswalk, the spokesman added.
He was pronounced dead at the scene
Ramsdell, a 54-year-old Plainsboro resident, did not suffer any injuries from the collision, Manalapan police Capt. Thomas Barstow said. A summons was not issued to Ramsdell.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Barstow said the crash caused a shutdown of the highway for approximately three hours.
Authorities asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash call Manalapan police Detective Dominick Donatelli at 732-446-8388 or Detective Eric Kerecman of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office at 1-800-533-7443.
Along with the Manalapan police, MONOC paramedics, the Englishtown-Manalapan First Aid Squad and members of the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office's Serious Collision Analysis Response Team assisted at the scene of the crash.
