Chester Jameson, 52, of Old Bridge, was able to bilk the department while serving as its treasurer.

MARLBORO -- A volunteer firefighter admitted on Monday to stealing more than $60,000 from the department over six years while serving as its treasurer.

Chester Jameson, 52, of Old Bridge, pleaded guilty to third-degree theft by deception before Monmouth County Superior Court Judge David Bauman, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni announced in a news release.

Between August 2009 and January 2015, Jameson wrote more than 100 checks to himself and cash totaling more than $60,000.

Jameson was a volunteer firefighter and treasurer for the Robertsville Volunteer Fire Company in Marlboro, Gramiccioni said.

Gramiccioni said, as part of a plea agreement, the state will recommend a sentence of three years in state prison. Jameson will have to serve at least two years before he is eligible for parole.

Judge Bauman ordered Jameson to resign from the fire company, forfeit his pension and pay $60,000 in restitution. He will not be allowed to hold any public office positions once he is released from prison.

Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Lawrence Nelsen handled the case.
