The number of peanut bunker found in Keyport is much smaller than in Keansburg earlier this week. Watch video

KEYPORT -- Hundreds of dead fish believed to be a much smaller part of the same mammoth die-off in Keansburg earlier this week turned up near the Keyport marine basin, News 12 New Jersey reported Friday.

Several miles away, in Keansburg, an estimated 1 million peanut bunker were discovered in the Waackaack Creek. DEP officials are unsure of the cause but believe the fish may have been chased into the waterway by predators. The huge volume of fish then caused the amount of oxygen in the water to drop to a fatal level.

The last of the 5,000 lbs. of fish in Keansburg were removed Thursday. Plans for a cleanup in Keyport had not yet been finalized, News 12 reported.
