Authorities said Thaddeus Reevey gunned down Eric Freeman, 22, at close range.
FREEHOLD -- A judge sentenced a Neptune Township man Friday to 45 years in state prison for the 2011 murder of an Asbury Park man.
Thaddeus Reevey gunned down Eric Freeman, 22, at the Asbury Park Village housing complex on Nov. 8, 2011, authorities said. In March, a jury convicted Reevey of first-degree murder following a three-week trial.
In addition to the 45-year sentence, Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Thomas F. Scully handed Reevey, 23, a 6-year concurrent prison term for weapons offenses. Reevey must serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
Police found Freeman with multiple gunshot wounds in the area of Adams Street and Sylvan Way in the housing complex, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni said. Freeman was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune where he was pronounced dead.
The Middlesex County Medical Examiner's Office, which handles cases for Monmouth County, determined Freeman's death was a homicide.
Gramiccioni said testimony and evidence presented at the trial showed Reevey shot Freeman three times with a handgun at close range.
Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Decker, director of the office's Major Crimes Bureau, led the investigation.
