The Jersey City man charged with stabbing his wife to death in their Long Street home last year has hanged himself to death in his cell at the Monmouth County Correctional Center, according to officials.

Thomas J. McManus, 43, is charged with stabbing his wife, 36-year-old Alnisha L. Jones, to death on March 16, 2015, and he was being housed at the Monmouth County facility because one of Jones' relatives works at the Hudson County jail in Kearny.

According to a memo sent to Hudson County officials, McManus hanged himself in his cell yesterday morning "by using a bed sheet tied to the top bunk and around his neck."

CPR was performed by jail staff and when EMT's arrived they performed CPR for about 10 more minutes before McManus was pronounced dead at 3:20 a.m., the memo says.

On the day of the murder, an ambulance request brought Jersey City police and EMT's to the couple's apartment at about 12:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Jones with multiple stab wounds and she was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:45 p.m., and official said at the time.

McManus was not at the residence when the emergency responders arrived, but just after 3 p.m. that day, he walked into the Jersey City Police Department's South District station house on Bergen Avenue. He was then taken to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office's Homicide Unit headquarters on Duncan Avenue, an official said at the time.

A source told The Jersey Journal earlier that day that the man who was taken into custody at the precinct had blood on his clothing.

McManus was charged with murder and weapons offense related to a knife. He was being held at the Monmouth County jail on a $350,000 cash only bail and he had faced 30 years to life in prison if convicted

A grand jury had indicted McManus on the charges and he was awaiting trial, the prosecutor's office said today.
