Man charged with stabbing N.J. cop with pen

The Staten Island man was being processed on DWI and drug possession charges when he allegedly assaulted the officer.

WALL TOWNSHIP - A 28-year-old Staten Island man was charged with multiple offenses after he police said he became combative with officers while being processed on drug possession and driving while intoxicated charges.

Shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday, Wall Township Patrolman Corey Whitman arrested Vincent Russo, 28, of Staten Island, for driving while intoxicated subsequent to a motor vehicle stop at the northbound Garden State Parkway exit ramp on Highway 138, police said.

A subsequent investigation resulted in Russo also being charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams and possession Xanax without a prescription. 

Police said that while Russo was being processed at police headquarters, he became combative and attempted to assault Patrolman Christopher Gallagher by stabbing him with a pen.

Russo was eventually subdued after actively resisting arrest, police said.

In addition to the DWI and drug possession charges, Russo was charged with resisting arrest, aggravated assault on an officer and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose. 

He was transported to the Monmouth County Correctional Facility in Freehold Township in default of $15,000 bail with 10-percent option.
