Check in any time you like, take a yoga class on a roof over-
looking the Atlantic Ocean or hang out in the lobby's rec room. There are few rules at The Asbury, the first new hotel to open in Asbury Park in nearly 50 years.

The 110-room hotel occupies the seven-story former Salvation Army building on Fifth Avenue, which stood empty for a decade before undergoing an estimated $50 million renovation.

Open space areas encourage both guests and the public to stop and spend a moment. A rec room in the lobby is filled with sofas, games and stocked bookshelves. Opposite is Soundbooth, a music-themed bar serving signature cocktails, with a wall of vinyl records, cassette tapes and CDs for guests to browse. There's also an outdoor Beer Garden, dispensing local and craft beers, with a food truck serving hot dogs.

One of the rule breakers -- don't look for an on-site restaurant; guests are encouraged to patronize local eateries and bars.

Up on the roof -- actually, on two rooftops -- are the fifth-floor Baronet, a green space for yoga classes in the morning, movie screenings under the stars and live music; and the seventh-floor Salvation, a black-and-white-themed cocktail lounge.

Want to spend a weekend with friends? Accommodations include "bunk" rooms,
complete with bunk beds and separate closets for each guest.

"Visitors don't have to leave the boardwalk, the concerts or the restaurants on Cookman Avenue early to sleep elsewhere. ... Asbury Park as a full weekend getaway benefits local businesses," says Michele Alonso, city director of planning and redevelopment. "We are also very pleased to have an iconic building in Asbury Park repurposed and done beautifully."

"Our goal is for the city's revitalization and redevelopment to benefit everyone who lives here," Alonso says.
