The spraying is planned for early Tuesday, officials said
MONMOUTH COUNTY -- The county's Mosquito Control Division plans a spray-control operation for Tuesday morning in parts of the county after West Nile virus was detected, county officials said.
The spraying will be carried out in the early morning hours from 4 to 6 a.m., unless there is inclement weather or winds in excess of 10 mph, the county said in a statement. Residents in the area scheduled for the control operation should remain inside and protect pets during the time sprayers are in the area. Residents should also bring in children's toys and pet bowls and turn off the intake fan in window air conditioners.
How to protect against mosquitoes
Spraying is planned for the following areas:
- Atlantic Highlands and Middletown (Hillside section): On residential streets in Atlantic Highlands east of First Avenue to Sears Avenue and north to E. Washington Avenue in Atlantic Highlands, and on residential streets from Portland Avenue to Grand Avenue north of Hillside Avenue in the Hillside section of Middletown.
- Lake Como, Wall Township (West Belmar section), Spring Lake Heights and Spring Lake: On residential streets south of 17th Avenue between Highway 35 and Route 71 in Lake Como and Wall Township, on residential streets north of Wall Road between Highway 35 and Route 71 in Spring Lake Heights and in Marucci Park in Spring Lake.
West Nile, an illness transmitted by mosquito bite, has appeared every summer in the continental United States since 1999. In most cases, those bitten will not experience any symptoms, but a few may suffer fever. In rare cases, West Nile is fatal in humans, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A 48-year-old man in Camden County suffered the first known human case of West Nile in New Jersey this year.
