The girl was taken to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
LONG BRANCH -- A 13-year-old girl was hospitalized on Saturday after she was hit by a Cadillac Escalade, police said.
The girl, a Wharton resident, was crossing Ocean Boulevard near the intersection of Avenel Boulevard around 7:35 p.m. when she was clipped by the sport utility vehicle, Long Branch police Lt. Frank Morey said.
The girl was with a group of kids trying to cross four lanes of traffic from the west side of the street to the east side, Morey said. The driver, however, had a green light.
Morey said the driver, only identified as a 47-year-old Sea Bright man, tried to swerve to avoid the group of kids but hit the 13-year-old girl. Several drivers behind the Escalade confirmed that the kids did not have the right of way to cross, Morey added.
The girl was taken to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch with non life-threatening injuries. Morey said she is expected to be released Sunday morning.
No charges have been filed.
The crash is under investigation by Long Branch police Officer David Stone.
