Suspected samples of the creatures were first discovered in Jersey waters last week
MONMOUTH BEACH -- The week after a specimen was discovered in Barnegat Bay, three more clinging jellyfish have been found in the Shrewsbury River, the Monmouth Beach Office of Emergency Management said in an alert Wednesday.
In its alert, the OEM said the dime-sized samples were believed to be the jellyfish, which are native to the Pacific Ocean but have begun to make an appearance in the Atlantic, including off Cape Cod and Long Island Sound, WABC 7 reported. The jellyfish likely arrived on the East Coast while clinging to the sides of ships from the Pacific.
A Middletown man was hospitalized after being stung while swimming in the river, the OEM said. The creature's sting can cause serious medical problems, including kidney failure, experts have said.
Possible clinging jellyfish found
The jellyfish generally inhabit the deep water of bays, clinging to eel grass or seaweed during the day and surfacing to feed at night.
