Be sure to wrap your fingers around a Bavarian brezel, which is technically big enough for two — but you won't want to share.
Whether in bottle or on draft, beer drinkers delight in the many offerings at Asbury Festhalle & Biegarten. But don't forget the sausages and Bavarian brezels available, too, as our tour of ethnic eateries at the Jersey Shore continues.
Asbury Festhalle & Biergarten | 527 Lake Ave., Asbury Park | (732) 997-8767 | asburybiergarten.com
Feast on German and Austrian fare at communal tables on the sun-drenched rooftop deck that overlooks Wesley Lake and Ocean Grove, or in the always cool, cavernous indoor food hall of this Asbury Park spot. First, settle on one of the 90-plus beers available in bottles and three sizes on draft. If you're planning on staying for a while (and not driving), nab a six-bottle Globe Trotter bucket sampler or a selection curated for lovers of American craft, Belgian and German brews. Now, turn your attention to the sausages. Chef James Avery tempts with bratwurst, veal weisswurst, Austrian kaese-krainers stuffed with cheese and an excellent frankfurter. All served with Viennese potato salad, hearty bread and sauerkraut. Lighter options include beer-steamed mussels and wurstsalat "carpaccio," arugula salad topped with thinly sliced sausages and peppery radishes. Oysters "braten," topped with sauerkraut and pretzel crumbs, are a great starter for the table. Be sure to wrap your fingers around a Bavarian brezel, which is technically big enough for two -- but you won't want to share.
