The 44-foot wooden barge was found under Eileen Scanlon's rental house, according to the Asbury Park Press
Workers in Monmouth County found something a bit out of the ordinary when they raised a waterfront bungalow this week: a 19th century wooden boat.
The 44-foot wooden barge was found under Eileen Scanlon's rental house, first reported by the Asbury Park Press, which put an end to the family rumors about a boat dating back to about 1880 that previously took coals and goods across local waterways.
The bungalow was located on 5th Street in Highlands.
Constructed of three-inch planks and iron nails, the 12-foot wide vessel was found with its rudder intact, the report says.
What's left of the boat after being buried for more than a hundred years will be discarded, but Scanlon will keep the bow, which was made from a tree, for her garden, the report says.
