Police say they believe the couple was targeted because the husband is the manager of the apartment complex.
NEPTUNE CITY -- Three masked men bound and gagged the manager of a Neptune City apartment complex and his wife while robbing them at knifepoint on Thursday morning, authorities said.
By Thursday afternoon, police were actively chasing down leads on the daring home-invasion robbery of the married couple who investigators said were targeted because of their responsibilities at the complex, said Neptune City police Director Edward Kirschenbaum.
The wife managed to free herself enough to be able call 911 at 9:53 a.m. shortly after the incident at 65 Steiner Ave., Kirschenbaum said.
He said three men with stockings pulled over their heads broke into the apartment of the building manager and his wife. Armed with knives, the assailants demanded money from the couple, tied their wrists and ankles and covered their mouths with duct tape, the police director said.
The culprits made off with an undetermined amount of cash, Kirschenbaum said.
He said the wife managed to use her hands enough to remove the duct tape from her mouth and call 911. When police arrived, the hands and feet of the manager and his wife were still bound, he said.
Neptune City police are working with Avon police as well as the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office K-9 unit and the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office to find the suspects, Kirschenbaum said.
He said one of the suspects was described as a Hispanic male who was wearing a black coat and tan pants.
